12×12, US Letter or A4 Digital Scrapbook Paper? A Practical Size Guide

Use 12×12 digital paper when you need a square scrapbook background or maximum flexibility for cropping. Use US Letter when the final project is designed for an 8.5 by 11 inch home printer, binder, worksheet, or journal page.

12×12 is the scrapbook standard

A 12 by 12 inch canvas gives room for several photographs, journaling, and decorative clusters. It can also be cropped into cards, strips, and smaller squares. At 300 DPI, the full file is usually 3600 by 3600 pixels.

US Letter is easier to print at home

US Letter measures 8.5 by 11 inches and works with most household printers in the United States. It is practical for planner inserts, binder covers, journal pages, labels, and printable ephemera. It does not create a full 12×12 sheet without tiling.

Choose based on the final object

  • Traditional scrapbook album: choose 12×12.
  • Digital scrapbook layout: choose 12×12 for a standard square canvas.
  • Ring binder or school project: choose US Letter.
  • Junk journal: either works; 12×12 offers more cropping options, while US Letter prints directly.
  • Cards and tags: use whichever file has the pattern scale you prefer.

Pattern scale matters as much as page size

A large floral designed for a 12×12 background may lose its composition when cropped to a small tag. A tiny repeating pattern can work almost anywhere. Look at every preview, not only the dimensions.

You can use both in one project

Use a 12×12 paper for the main layout and print coordinated cards or labels on US Letter. A good digital bundle may include both sizes or elements that can be arranged on a Letter sheet. Always check the individual Etsy listing.

A4, US Letter and 12×12 at a glance

Add A4 when your printer or album calls for it

A4 is 210 × 297 mm (8.27 × 11.69 in), or 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 DPI. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in (2550 × 3300 pixels), while a square 12×12 page is 3600 × 3600 pixels. These are file dimensions, not a promise of borderless output.

Before buying a full pack, download a coordinated sample, set the document to Actual Size/100%, and check your printer’s non-printable margins. Do not resize A4 to US Letter casually: the crop and decorative edge can change.
